couple drinking their wee. |
Agh!
1. Human urine is made of about 95% water.
2. The remaining 5% is made up of about 3,000 compounds.
3. We haven't always flushed away our wee - in the past it has been used to wash clothes, treat sores and even whiten teeth.
4. In the 1800s urine was used to make gunpowder.
5. Urine has even been used to charge a mobile phone. John told Dermot and Holly that he began drinking his own urine when he was just 17 years-old because he met someone else who drank their wee.
He had been a pretty wild youngster and was trying to live a more healthy lifestyle when he noticed a positive difference drinking his own wee made. Bex said she'd suffered from depression for ten years for which she took medication. When she discovered John's alternative 'health kick' she decided to give it a go and said that for the first few months it made her feel really happy and bouncy, until her body got used to it. Drinking her own urine meant she could come off her medication.
Bex and John were joined by Dr. Ranj who added that it's not advisable to come off any medication without talking to your doctor first, and that whilst drinking wee has been okay for Bex and John, it isn't a good idea to drink it when you are taking any kind of medication. You should see your doctor first. He added that of course wee is your body's way of getting rid of stuff it doesn't want.
Dermot asked of the wee was smelly, and Bex said it depended on what she ate - that if you had a healthy diet then no it didn't. She admitted to not liking the taste of her own urine. John was more blunt. "It smells and tastes like wee," he said, "and there's no getting around it." Curious Dermot asked if they drank it warm and fresh or if they chilled it first. Warm and fresh was the order of the day. Holly noted that Bex said it made her eyes brighter, her skin clearer, it gave her more energy, and it helped clear up cuts and burns quickly.
Dr Ranj said that urine therapy isn't new, but is not recommended by doctors.
